Please reach out to your local Home Builders Association.



The first step is to find the local Home Builders Association in your area if you don't mind. You can get a list of builders in your area who build new homes from them. You can also look through the real estate section of your local newspaper (either online or in print) to see who is building what and where. This can assist you in determining which companies are building which types of homes, allowing you to select a builder specializing in the kind of home you desire. Could you look through these listings and categorize them according to the type of house you want, then find homes in your price range?



Could you contact your real estate agent?



Your real estate agent can also direct you to someone who can construct your home. When looking for a builder, your real estate agent should not be your only source of information, but it can help you narrow down your options.



Inquire with friends and family in your area.



If you know someone who has a house in your area that you adore (and want one similar to it), you can just ask about who built it and other details such as price, builder reliability, and so on. If the homeowner has a home similar to the one you want and is pleased with the price, quality, artistry, and so on, it's a safe bet that you'll get lucky if you use the same builder.



I'm also doing my homework online.



Although it is not the only way to obtain information, it is a good idea to research each of your prospective builders by visiting sites such as the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org) and researching a specific company's background. You don't want to be left with a subpar, unfinished, or unsatisfactory home because you chose the wrong contractor.



Choosing between options



Once you've compiled a list of custom home builders in your area, contact each one and ask for the addresses of some of the recently completed homes. If homeowners are willing, builders may provide you with their names and addresses. Drive by these homes, introduce yourself (or call first, which is a good idea if you want to be polite), and explain that you're considering hiring this particular home builder to build a home for you. Most homeowners are happy to recommend a home builder they've been pleased with – and most are also excited to give you an earful if they're not satisfied with what they got, to the point where they'll steer you away from a specific builder.



Last, ask these homeowners how responsive their builder was to problems that arose after the home was built. Most reputable home builders will provide a warranty with their work and will be happy to fix minor, unforeseen issues that occur after construction is completed quickly; when homeowners are satisfied with the particular construction company, you know you've got a winner.
