Forgot MacBook Password No Question Mark

Have you ever forgotten your Mac password? It can be a frustrating experience, like losing your car keys or being locked out of your own home. Just think of all the things on your MacBook.

Reset Forgotten Mac Login Password With Apple ID
It is possible to reset your login password if your Apple ID is associated with your user account.

Step 1. To get started, click the question mark next to the password field.

Don't see the question mark? Press and hold the power button until your Mac shuts down, then press and hold the power button again to restart it.
Step 2. You will see an arrow next to “reset using your Apple ID”, click on it.

Step 3. Then, enter your Apple ID and password.

Onscreen instructions will help you reset your login password.

Reset Mac Password in Recovery Mode
When all else fails, there is always recovery mode. Recovery mode is like the emergency exit of a building, your last resort when all else fails. By accessing recovery mode, you can reset your Mac password and restore your device to its original settings. Please note that the access recovery mode differs for new and old generation Macs.

This is how you can access recovery mode on an Intel-based Mac:
Turn off your computer.

Hold down the power button, Command and R keys simultaneously.

Wait for the loading bar to appear on the screen as your Mac boots into recovery mode.

This is how you can access recovery mode on a Mac M1:
Turn off your computer.

Hold down the power button

Click "Options" and select "Continue."

This is how you can reset Mac password in recovery mode:
Go to "Utilities" in the Apple menu.

Select "Terminal".

Type "reset password" (one word) and click "Return".

Navigate to the main hard drive and select your user account.

Reset your password and click "Save".

Reset your Mac password with a FileVault recovery key
Or, you may see a tip like: You can reset your password using your recovery key. Here, it refers to your FileVault recovery key. But most of you probably haven't noticed the FileVault recovery key the moment your FileVault was turned on, let alone remember it.

But if you're one of the few people who remembers the FileVault recovery key, you can use it to reset your forgotten Mac Air password.

Click the arrow icon to enter the Recovery Key field.
Enter your recovery key (note the typing correction).
Follow the instructions to reset a new password.
Click "Reset Password". Then restart your Mac and sign in with the new password.

Get a hint for your password
If you forgot your Apple password, you can recover it with a hint. This is by far the easiest way to regain your access. Therefore, we encourage you to create suggestions each time you choose a new password. Take a few simple actions:

Go to System Preferences > Users and Groups
Click the lock icon > username
Select the option to change the password and add a phrase/word that you associate with a newly created password in 'Password hint (recommended)'.

One more important thing. To make sure your password hint appears when you need it, you must allow your Mac to show hints. Under Users and Groups, click Sign-in Options and check the box next to "Show password hints." Ready to go.
