TSMC Monopolizes Renesas World's First 28nm Automotive MCU Order

Renesas Electronics, a Japanese microcontroller manufacturer, plans to reduce the cost of manufacturing equipment for chips. TSMC plans to build all automotive microcontrollers (MCUs) for TSMC and focus on software and semiconductor R&D.

Recently, Renesas released the industry's first integrated flash MCU using 28nm technology, and it will begin shipping samples on the same day. To build the next generation of more efficient and reliable environmentally friendly cars and self-driving cars, this revolutionary RH850/E2x series of microcontrollers incorporates up to six 400Mhz processor cores, making it the industry's first 9600 MIPS Directive. On-chip flash MCUs with on-chip control capabilities. This family of MCUs also features up to 16MB of built-in flash memory and improved security and functional security. xc3s200-4tqg144c

The Renesas 28-nanometer MCU has 3 times higher computing performance than the current 40-nanometer MCU. With increasing autopilot technology, it can meet the needs of MCUs with low power consumption and high processing performance. Renesas said that the 28-nanometer MCU is currently the world's most advanced product, has been sampled in March to a number of well-known auto parts factory such as DENSO, the goal is to mass production through TSMC in 2020, Renesas Home Crystal Yuanyuan gradually withdrew from production of automotive semiconductors.

Following the announcement of the development of the 28nm embedded flash memory in February 2015, Renesas Electronics announced in September 2016 that it will cooperate with TSMC to produce 28nm MCUs. Renesas stated in today’s press release that the introduction of the world’s first 28nm embedded flash MCU to the market today will be another important milestone for Renesas Electronics. The Nikkei pointed out that Renesas can lower production costs, and TSMC can also use depreciated equipment to produce 28-nanometer MCUs.

According to the financial report released by Renesas, the revenue of Renesas Semiconductor’s semiconductor business in the last quarter (October-December 2017) was based on Non-GAAP, which represents a significant increase of 28.0% from the same period last year to 206.5 billion. Yuan, including automotive semiconductor revenue growth of 14.7% to 107.8 billion yen.

Accumulation of Renesas Semiconductor's total annual revenue for 2017 increased by 23.4% to 76657 million yen, including automotive semiconductor revenue growth of 13.8% to 408.1 million yen.
