Coffee and Energy Drinks: The War to Keep You Awake

You've probably felt the power of energy from coffee -- thanks to its high levels of caffeine. It's possible to grab a cup or energy drink before you go to bed to get the morning started. While both give you caffeine, black coffee is known to have a higher intake of sugars than energy drinks.

Coffee also has several other benefits, including:

Caffeine is the main ingredient in coffee's ability to boost energy levels. When you drink your cup of coffee, the stimulant is absorbed into your the bloodstream. The caffeine is then transported to the brain. The brain utilizes caffeine to block the inhibitory neurotransmitter, adenosine. This increases the level of other neurotransmitters, such as dopamine or norepinephrine. This increases the rate at which neurons fire.

According to human studies coffee has been proven to improve the brain's function.

While it is generally believed that caffeine is the main reason for many of these wonderful benefits, the reality is different.
